When Should You See a Pulmonologist? 7 Signs Not to Ignore
A persistent cough, breathlessness or loud snoring can be more than a nuisance. Here are seven signs it's time to see a lung specialist.

Most coughs and colds settle on their own. But some breathing symptoms are your body's way of asking for a closer look. As a pulmonologist, I'd much rather see a patient early — when problems are easier to treat — than after months of waiting.
Here are seven signs that it's worth booking a consultation with a lung specialist.
1. A cough that won't go away
A cough lasting more than three weeks, or one that keeps coming back, deserves evaluation. Causes range from asthma and acid reflux to infection and, less commonly, something more serious. Coughing up blood should always be checked promptly.
2. Breathlessness that's new or getting worse
Feeling short of breath during everyday activities — climbing stairs, walking to the shops — is not a normal part of ageing. It can point to asthma, COPD, heart problems or lung disease, and the cause is very treatable once identified.
3. Wheezing or noisy breathing
A whistling sound when you breathe out often signals narrowed airways, as in asthma or COPD. The right inhaler plan can make a dramatic difference.
4. Loud snoring with daytime tiredness
Loud, habitual snoring — especially with pauses in breathing or waking up unrefreshed — may be obstructive sleep apnea. Left untreated, it raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. A simple sleep study can confirm it.
5. Repeated chest infections
If you find yourself getting one chest infection after another, there may be an underlying condition making your lungs more vulnerable. Finding and treating it breaks the cycle.
6. An abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan
A nodule, shadow or other finding on a scan should be reviewed by a specialist. Most are harmless, but a pulmonologist can advise the safest next step — whether that's simply repeating the scan later or taking a small sample.
7. A known lung condition that isn't well controlled
If you already have asthma, COPD or another lung condition but still have frequent symptoms or flare-ups, your treatment plan may simply need fine-tuning.
The bottom line
You don't need to wait until symptoms are severe. If any of the above sounds familiar, an early consultation can bring clarity, relief and peace of mind.
